Helping People throughout Greater Boston Get Justice for Injuries Caused by Defective Stryker Orthopedic Implants
Information you need if you’ve had a Stryker Rejuvenate Hip, ABG II Hip Stems Implant or Spine OASYS Midline Occiput Plate, or if you’re experiencing problems related to the use of a ShapeMatch Cutting Guide used during your knee replacement
Stryker is one of the world’s largest medical technology companies and a leading provider of orthopedic devices and implantable therapies. As the population ages, there is an increasing demand for products that enable us to enjoy greater mobility with less pain. That is a promise that several of Stryker’s products have failed to deliver on.
At the Boston personal injury firm of Swartz & Lynch LLP, our attorneys provide counsel and representation to people throughout Massachusetts who have been harmed by these and similar implants, including the DePuy metal-on-metal hip implant and transvaginal mesh (TVM) cases.
While you may be offered revision surgery and a certain amount of compensation by Stryker’s insurance company, you may be eligible to receive greater compensation, including monetary compensation for pain and suffering, by filing a medical products liability lawsuit against Stryker.
Stryker hip implants: A history of problems
Tens of thousands of people throughout the United States have received a Stryker hip implant. Today, they are suffering from its ill effects, including:
- Swelling and inflammation caused by metallosis
- Discomfort and pain
- Walking problems
- Necrosis, in which metal corrosion can cause tissue surrounding the implant to die
- Osteolysis, or bone loss caused by a reaction to metal particles
Recent recalls: ShapeMatch and OASYS
In April 2013, the FDA issued a recall for Stryker Orthopaedics’ ShapeMatch Cutting Guide, which is used by surgeons during knee replacement procedures. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the recall is “due to a software defect that results in wider cutting ranges.” Because the cutting guides essentially throw off the surgeon’s depth and angle of cut, this may result in joint instability, fractures, chronic pain, limited mobility and the need for revision surgery.
Even more recently, a recall was made on Stryker’s OASYS Midline Occiput Plate, for which there have been reports of postoperative problems that may lead to blood loss, injury to the nerves and a need for revision surgery.
